Today,
we are going to start a book that is made up and couldn’t be true. This is a book with talking animals. This is a book with flying dragons.
And this book is filled with adventure! And this book has a map! We will follow along on the map as we read each chapter. Take a good look at it now.
The map
Elmer
Now, before we begin I want to point out one thing that can be a bit confusing. The name of the book is My Father’s Dragon. The narrator – the person who is telling the story – often calls the main character “my father”. But, the main character we see and follow is a little boy named Elmer. That’s the confusing part. You may be wondering, “How can a little boy be a father?”
Well, you have to imagine that one day Elmer will grow up and become a father and his child will grow up to tell the story we are reading now.
